Concrete Cutoff Wall - W.F. George Dam, AL
|
Alabama

May 2000 - |
|
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers owns and operates the
massive W.F. George Dam on the Chattahoochee River separating Georgia
and Alabama. During the almost 40 years of service, a number of major
seepage events have occurred, associated with the heavily solutioned
limestone bedrock foundation. Several phases of remediation have been
undertaken with various and variable success. Most recently, however,
the Corps has determined that the most cost and risk effective solution
will be a “positive concrete cut off” wall.
Given Dr. Bruce’s involvement in a similar project in Arkansas
in 1992 – 1994, Geosystems was employed by the Mobile District
of the Corps to:
- Review all relevant correspondences to date.
- Report on the constructability of various solutions.
- Interview potential bidders with regards to cost and constructability
issues.
- Help prepare plans and Specifications.
- Provide technical support to the contractor selection teams.
- Provide on site assistance during construction.
Construction is scheduled to commence in June 2001.
